Bereavement and Funeral Ministry

Making Funeral Arrangements

If you are here because you have lost a loved one or anticipate the death of a loved one, we extend our deepest condolences to you. We mourn with you and hold you up in prayer.

The Bereavement and Funeral Ministry responds to families who are grieving the death of a loved one. Bereavement Team members listen to the needs of the family and help them plan the Mass of Christian Burial so that the liturgy reflects the wishes and needs of the family. The Bereavement Minister will be present at the funeral to be a supportive presence for the family.

Rite of Christian Burial

The rites of the Order of Christian Funerals are rites of the living. It is how the Church walks with those who mourn. The common celebration of the rites surrounding death takes the form of three liturgical celebrations:

• A Vigil

• The Funeral Liturgy

• The Rite of Committal

  • When should the parish be contacted?

    • If a person or family member would like to preplan a funeral, contact the Bereavement Coordinator or parish office for materials to help with pre-planning.
    • When a loved one passes away, contact funeral home first and then the Bereavement Coordinator or parish office. Please do not plan dates or times with family members before speaking with Bereavement Coordinator. Many calendars (funeral home, parish, priest, family) must all be aligned for the best date for a Funeral Mass.

  • Can there be a Funeral Mass if a person is cremated?

Yes. The catechesis states that preference is for a body to be present at the Funeral Mass and cremation happens after Mass. However, due to various circumstances, cremation might happen before the Mass. In those circumstances, having the cremated remains at the Funeral Mass is acceptable.

  • Can Funeral Masses be livestreamed?

Yes, for a small fee, a private link for a livestream can be created for family to pass along to those who cannot be in attendance.
