Unbaptized Person

What Happens When an Unbaptized Person

Enters OCIA?

When an unbaptized person begins the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA), they embark on a sacred journey—a journey toward becoming fully initiated into the Catholic Church through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist.

The Journey Begins: Inquiry

This first phase is all about exploration. You’re invited to ask questions, learn about the Catholic faith, and discover whether God is calling you to become Catholic. There’s no pressure—just an open door.

The Catechumenate: Growing in Faith

Once you decide to move forward, you become a catechumen—someone preparing for Baptism and learning the Catholic faith. This period involves deeper formation in Scripture, prayer, Church teaching, and community life. You’re not just learning about Catholicism—you’re beginning to live it.

Rite of Election: A Public "Yes"

As your readiness grows, you participate in the Rite of Election, on the first Sunday of Lent. Here, the Church formally recognizes your desire to receive the sacraments. You are now called “the elect,” and the community commits to praying for you as you prepare for initiation.

The Easter Vigil: Full Initiation

On the most sacred night of the Church year, the Easter Vigil, you receive the Sacraments of Initiation:

  • Baptism: You are washed clean of all sin and reborn as a child of God.
  • Confirmation: You are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.
  • Eucharist: You receive the Body and Blood of Christ for the first time.

This moment marks your full entry into the Catholic Church. You are now a member of the Body of Christ, united with the Church across time and space.

After Easter: Mystagogy

The journey doesn’t end at Easter. In the weeks that follow, you enter a period called mystagogy, where you will begin a more active life in the parish and growing in your new life in Christ.

This entire process is not just educational—it’s transformational. It’s about responding to God’s call, receiving His grace, and becoming part of His Church. If you’re unbaptized and feeling drawn to the Catholic faith, OCIA is the path that leads to new life.
